Brief History of the Guitar

The modern day guitar has its roots in various ancient string instruments that originate in Asia. Several types of guitar styles have come and gone since the Renaissance time period, but the one that remains today is almost a completely different instrument. Of course, there are stylistic differences between the guitars in several different time periods. Baroque guitars which are similar to classical guitars, for example, are different than modern classical guitars because they are smaller.

Today there are several types of guitars that are meant to be played within certain genres. Classical guitars, flamenco guitars, electric guitars, bass guitars, and steel string acoustic guitars are just a few examples. The electric guitar has a smaller body than acoustic guitars. In an acoustic guitar the body helps project the sound. The electric guitar does not need a large body because electronics project the sound.
